David has lived in Miami for more than 30 years. He began his career as a life insurance agent with Mutual of New York, and later became licensed as an independent broker. When he realized that one company’s products could not fill all of his clients’ needs—and in fact, that client financial needs were often not served by products at all—David gave up his securities licenses, a bold and unconventional move, to provide fee-only advice. In 2008, he joined FAC Wealth Management in Naples, Florida, and two years later opened David Smith Advisory. Importantly, there was no selling of positions, so David’s career changes didn’t cost his clients, as is typical when a financial adviser moves around.
Today, David pursues continuing education to maintain his edge and add to his knowledge base. He earned Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations in 1989 and 1991, respectively, from the American College. In 1999, he earned the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. He graduated with a degree in business administration from Widener University in 1978.
In his free time, David enjoys running half-marathons and considers exercise a mental investment in the future. He is married to Marsha, a perfusionist at Comprehensive Care Services. They have two dogs, Willie and Zizou, a standard and miniature schnauzer. Their son Raleigh graduated in 2014 from Northwestern University and now is a professional tennis player. The entire family enjoys spending time at their home in Vermont’s Green Mountains.
